Finish Strong: 7 Ways to Take Control of Your Health Before the New Year

By Dr. Jeniece Paige | Black Vegan Health & Wellness Enterprise LLC
November is here, and before we know it, another year will be behind us.
For many people, this is the time when we begin thinking about what we want to accomplish next year. We start making lists, setting goals, planning vacations, and thinking about New Year's resolutions. But what about your health?
Have you taken the time to reflect on how you've cared for yourself this year? Have you been intentional about your nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and overall wellness?
If not, I want to encourage you to make the remaining weeks of this year count.
You don't have to wait until January 1 to begin creating a healthier lifestyle. You can start today!
Why finishing strong matters
Sometimes we approach our health with an all-or-nothing mindset. We tell ourselves that we'll start exercising next month, change our eating habits after the holidays, or finally schedule that wellness appointment in January.
Unfortunately, those promises can become another year of postponing the very things our bodies need.
Finishing strong isn't about being perfect. It's about being intentional.
It's recognizing that every meal, every walk, every decision to rest, and every step toward better health is an opportunity to move in the right direction.
Seven ways to finish the year stronger and healthier
1. Take an honest look at your health.
Start with an honest assessment of where you are today.
Consider your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, energy levels, sleep quality, nutrition, and physical activity.
Are there areas that need more attention? Have you postponed appointments or ignored symptoms?
Use this time to reconnect with your health priorities and speak with your healthcare provider about appropriate screenings and preventive care.
2. Make nutrition a priority.
Your nutrition plays an important role in your overall health.
Rather than focusing on restrictive diets, begin making simple improvements:
Add more colorful vegetables and fruits.
Increase your intake of fiber-rich foods.
Choose more whole and minimally processed foods.
Drink adequate water.
Plan meals instead of relying on convenience foods every day.
You don't have to change everything overnight. Start with one or two habits you can maintain.
3. Get consistent with movement.
Movement is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
Whether you enjoy walking, strength training, cycling, dancing, or group fitness, find activities that fit your schedule and abilities.
Start where you are. Consistency matters more than trying to do everything at once.
4. Pay attention to stress and cortisol management.
Busy schedules, professional responsibilities, family obligations, and everyday challenges can take a toll on your well-being.
Create opportunities to slow down.
Consider prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, journaling, spending time outdoors, or simply taking a break from your daily responsibilities.
Remember, rest is not a reward for completing everything on your to-do list. It is part of taking care of yourself.
5. Prioritize sleep and recovery.
Your body needs adequate rest to support its daily functions.
Establish a consistent bedtime, create a relaxing evening routine, reduce unnecessary screen time before bed, and make your bedroom a comfortable place to rest.
Don't overlook sleep when evaluating your overall wellness.
6. Create realistic health goals.
Instead of setting five or ten goals that feel overwhelming, choose two or three priorities for the remainder of the year.
For example:
Walk 20–30 minutes several days a week.
Prepare more meals at home.
Schedule overdue preventive appointments.
Establish a consistent bedtime.
Make time for weekly self-care.
Your goals should be realistic, measurable, and aligned with your current lifestyle.
7. Invest in your personal wellness education.
One of the most powerful things you can do for your health is become more informed.
Understanding nutrition, lifestyle habits, preventive wellness, and the connection between physical and emotional well-being can help you make more informed decisions.
Surround yourself with resources, professionals, and a community that encourages you to keep growing.
Your health is worth the investment.
